greater circularity

TriFootFood, DoseCerta and Orgânico

The TRIFOOTFOOD project aims to equip Trivalor – the company that owns Gertal, the concessionaire providing meals at FEUP’s canteen – with the capability to include and communicate the Carbon Footprint of the meals offered to its customers.

This pilot project was well received by SASUP – the Social Support Services of the University of Porto, responsible for managing the campus canteens and dining halls – and marked an initial approach that included qualitative environmental information about the carbon footprint of the dishes served at FEUP’s canteen.

Essentially, it was an awareness campaign that engaged the FEUP community and is currently being implemented at FBAUP.

In the Municipality of Porto, there are three projects aimed at combating food waste:

The Dose Certa Programme targets food service establishments

(canteens, restaurants, hotels, shopping centres, markets, and others) and combines reducing food waste with promoting sustainable eating habits.

This programme, led by LIPOR in partnership with the Portuguese Nutrition Association, analyses and evaluates the practices of each establishment to create an improvement plan, reducing losses and, consequently, costs. Partners are encouraged to develop more sustainable menus, for instance, by using seasonal and local products and paying attention to variety, portion sizes, and the nutritional value of the food.

Since 2016, the Municipality of Porto has been part of the Embrulha. Project,

where the principle is simple: if you can’t eat everything, wrap it up. In partnership with LIPOR, this initiative provides restaurants with free biodegradable packaging for customers to take away their leftover meals. This simple action helps reduce food waste by allowing customers to consume the meal later.

In 2021, the Orgânico Project was launched,

focusing on reducing food waste and now serving as the most visible face of Porto Ambiente’s biowaste management efforts. By setting up collection points and conducting door-to-door visits in certain areas of the city, the project has, to date, collected over 2,500 tonnes of waste, involving more than 34,000 households.
