Biofuels and Electric Mobility
Better Mobillity
Move2LowC and STCP Fleet
The transition to more sustainable urban mobility is part of the fight against climate change and has an impact on improving the quality of life in cities. In Porto, this transformation is being driven by initiatives that integrate technological innovation and sustainability, promoting ecological alternatives for transport.
The project Move2LowC, operating within a circular economy framework, focuses on the production of sustainable biofuels. Meanwhile, the modernization plan for the STCP fleet focuses on electric mobility, aligning with decarbonization targets and the Municipality’s transport policy, promoting inclusive and sustainable mobility in the city.
This project aims to primarily produce biofuels for the heavy goods
and passenger transport sectors, enabling the development of a technological exploitation plan that supports investment in the production of biofuels on a commercial scale.
In response to the challenge of decarbonisation, the focus in road transport will be on hydrogen-based biofuels (BioH2) and biomethane (BioCH4).
BioH2 can be produced from BioCH4 through steam reforming and water gas shift processes, with part of the BioCH4 being used to provide energy for the production system.
On the other hand, BioCH4 can be recovered from landfills, as well as it can be produced through methanation from the recovery of biogenic or non-biogenic CO2 and sustainable H2 produced by water electrolysis using solar or wind electricity.
The Porto Public Transport Company (STCP) is transforming the public transport system
into an increasingly sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative. With an investment of around three million euros, STCP is not only acquiring state-of-the-art electric buses but also implementing charging infrastructure at strategic points throughout the city, ensuring the autonomy and efficiency of this new fleet.
At the beginning of 2024, STCP added 48 new electric buses to its fleet with the aim of reducing carbon emissions, reinforcing the city of Porto’s commitment to sustainability and combating climate change. This fleet renewal is part of a strategic plan that recognizes the vital role of public transport in creating a greener and more accessible city.
