Mobility Innovation
Better Mobility
Addvolt and Porto Ambiente Fleet
Technological innovation plays a central role in the transition to more sustainable mobility. Addvolt has developed a patented Electric Plug-in system that eliminates the use of diesel in the distribution of fresh and frozen products. This innovative technology allows for the recovery, production, and storage of energy on board of trucks, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and noise.
By combining operational efficiency with clean energy solutions, Porto Ambiente reinforces the Municipality of Porto’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 through the modernization of its urban cleaning and waste collection fleet. This initiative promotes environmental sustainability while ensuring a silent and effective service in waste management. These advancements reflect Porto’s role in the transition to greener and more resilient urban practices.
These are two examples that monitor environmental indicators and promote a transition to more sustainable mobility.
Founded by former students of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto (FEUP),
Addvolt develops clean energy solutions for transport, making each vehicle smarter and more sustainable by reducing diesel consumption, CO2 emissions, noise, and maintenance costs.
The company has created a Plug-in Electric system – a technology that is already patented in several territories – which ensures the distribution of fresh and frozen products without the use of diesel. Furthermore, it is free from CO2 emissions and operates with low noise due to the combination of a gas vehicle with a cooling system powered electrically by Addvolt.
The solution allows for the recovery, production, and storage of energy on board of trucks transporting temperature-controlled products.
Porto Ambiente has been modernizing its fleet of waste collection trucks
by adopting vehicles powered by natural gas. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operational noise, aligning with the sustainability policy of the Municipality of Porto.
Recently, the company announced the incorporation of biomethane (a 100% renewable gas produced from organic waste) into the fuel supply for its vehicles. This measure will enable the collection vehicles to operate with zero emissions, reinforcing the city’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030.
The operational model of Porto Ambiente (which ensures waste collection around the clock) guarantees efficiency in waste management and the maintenance of urban cleanliness, contributing to the quality of life for the citizens of Porto.
